WAR OF THE SUBMARINE

A Military Thriller Series by R.G. Roberts

Blurb

World War I was the war of the battleship. World War II was the war of the aircraft carrier. World War III will be the war of the submarine. Undersea technology has changed the world, and every nation wants territory. No one wants war—or plans for it—but a series of unrelated incidents, mix-ups, and greedy grabs for ocean-floor real estate escalate straight into a shooting war that no one knows how to stop...one that engulfs the Indian Ocean and threatens to spill out towards the rest of the world. Old alliances are overturned and new ones form, with the Grand Alliance of the U.S., U.K., and Australia facing off against Russia, India, and France. Caught in a four-way civil war, China is on the outside looking in, but minor nations are forced to pick sides in the war no one expected to come—and no one knows how to win. For his part, Commander Alex Coleman is pretty sure that heroes don’t explode coffee creamer fireballs and hijack cruise ships—but let’s not talk about that where the admirals can hear; one already hates him and that’s quite enough. He’s also certain they don’t end up with a boat old enough to drink and his crew a few beers short of a six pack. No one expects him to make a difference...until the enemy gets a vote.

CARDINAL VIRTUES

War of the Submarine Book 1

Commander Alex Coleman is no hero. Just ask him.

It’s 2037 and Alex is one more disobeyed order away from kissing his naval career goodbye.

He used to be high speed, the kind of officer on the fast track to submarine command. Then he threw it all away trying to save a few civilian lives from his glory hungry commanding officer. No pain no gain, right? Alex isn’t sorry he did the right thing but being everyone’s favorite scapegoat isn’t fun.

Now, he’s marking time to retirement on Armistice Station, an underwater megastation where you can buy and do anything—except salvage a trashed Navy career. Alex is stuck doling out supplies to visiting Navy ships and chasing unruly sailors, just how he wanted to spend his last years in the good old U.S. Navy.

But things aren’t quiet in Alex’s underwater amusement park. France and India are expanding into the Indian Ocean and want the United States out, and Alex’s eclectic band of castoff sailors are all that’s in their way. Armed with nothing but creativity and coffee creamer fireballs, Alex must team up with the admiral who hates him most. Together, they must escape the jaws of a closing enemy trap set by the canny French commander who ruined his career in the first place. Can Alex outsmart her this time, or will he end up as the first POW in the next world war?

Cardinal Virtues is first book in the series War of the Submarine, also published as Season 1 of the War of the Submarine serial on Kindle Vella.

Praise For The Series

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "An extraordinary tale!!! I didn't know what to expect since I heard read a book by the author before. Was I ever pleasantly surprised! The story was jam-packed with thrills & suspense. The book has an excellent plot, great characters, and a mystery or two. Kudos to Mr. Roberts. I look forward to reading your next book! ★★★★★ Amazon reviewer

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A great techno-thriller! Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed this follow up novel. What a great read for fans of technological and political intrigue and storytelling. The battle scenes are gripping and entirely believable. Submarine based fiction is my favourite, ever since I read the “Hunt for Red October”, I have been hooked. And this little series of 3 books more than ticks all the boxes for me. What a cracking read…Amazon reviewer

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Technically & procedurally accurate. Very believable story line(s). The most interesting and refreshing character developments I've read in years. I've devoured the first two volumes in this series and pre-ordered the third. 👍👍 Amazon reviewer

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Scary, Yet Exciting... I loved reading this book. Following the ups and downs of a career navy officer, dealing with incompetent senior officers who seem only concerned about themselves, not their crew and those around them in the word was difficult to take. Knowing that his hopes for his future were dashed, but also believing that he would be able to get through the problems and come up with great ways to save the whole thing made for no difficulty continuing to read, even when I had other things that needed doing. This is a great story and I want to continue reading the next books in the series. Amazon Reviewer

THE WAR NO ONE WANTED

War of the Submarine Book 2

No one wants war.

But no nation has the guts to stop it.

Alex Coleman had a chance to end World War III before it started...instead, he lost an unwinnable battle. Now, he finally has command of his own submarine, but USS Jimmy Carter is old enough to drink, his crew is a few beers short of a six pack, and no one—particularly the admiral who hates him—expects him to make a difference.

It doesn’t help that the U.S. Navy and their allies started the war on the wrong foot. No one wanted war, or planned for it, but a series of unrelated incidents, mix-ups, and greedy grabs for ocean-floor real estate escalated straight into a shooting war that no one knows how to stop. Now submariners like Alex are on the front lines, fighting against overwhelming odds—and finding out that American technology no longer holds the edge it once did. Enemy subs are fast, their torpedoes are faster, and both are quieter than ever before.

Driving around in the oldest attack submarine in the Navy means Alex knows that better than anyone. Jimmy Carter still has life left in her, but proving that to his superiors is the hard part. His boat keeps getting relegated to convoy duty while newer boats take the fight to the enemy...and die doing it.

Meanwhile, Alex juggles his misfit crew with a commodore who wants to rip his boat out from under him and send her to the breakers. All he wants is one chance. Just one.

Because no one ever taught Alex Coleman how to quit.

The War No One Wanted is book 2 in the series War of the Submarine, also published as Season 2 of the War of the Submarine serial on Kindle Vella. The book version has been expanded with additional scenes and chapters not available in the serial.

FIRE WHEN READY

War of the Submarine Book 3

1 out of every 3 submarines deploying isn’t coming home.

Will Alex Coleman’s boat beat the odds?

No one expected war, and the U.S. Navy has paid the price. Once the greatest Navy in the world, by 2039, American submariners find themselves outnumbered and outgunned by an alliance of France, India, and the enemy lurking in the dark: Russia. It’s not their fault that the politicians back home didn’t expect war as the world expanded into underwater territory, but now sailors like Commander Alex Coleman are left facing the consequences.

Alex’s boat is old enough to drink and his crew is a few beers short of a six pack. But he’s got to pull them together before embarking on a dangerous mission into the undersea wild west to rescue scientists working on a top secret project. If he doesn’t, no one will miss the U.S. Navy’s oldest attack submarine. But if he does…he might just change the world.

Can Alex and his fellows overcome enemy submariners with newer boats, quieter technology, and faster torpedoes? Or will more submariners rest on the ocean bottom on eternal patrol?

Fire When Ready is the third book in the series War of the Submarine, also published as Season 3 of the War of the Submarine serial on Kindle Vella. The book version has been expanded with additional scenes and chapters not available in the serial.

I WILL TRY

War of the Submarine Book 4

Submariners who make history rarely come home.

Commander Alex Coleman was watching paint dry when World War III started. Everyone expected China to be the Big Bad, but while China was busy with their own civil war, India, France, and Russia started gobbling up prime territory on the ocean floor. Stealth being the best gig in warfare, submarines are at the forefront of this unexpected conflict. Enter USS Jimmy Carter: America’s oldest attack submarine.

Being contrary, unorthodox, and good at pissing admirals off got Alex sentenced to a sub meant for the breakers. His crew is assembled of rejects and misfits no one else wants, from the cowardly XO to the drunk sonar tech. The Navy prefers them all on the sidelines, and no one expects them to matter. But sometimes even the U.S. Navy forgets that the enemy gets a vote.

So, when his boat sets sail to escort Convoy 57 though an unimportant patch of the Indian Ocean, Alex anticipates another dull milk run. Not a battle no one can win. Missiles start raining down, and when their boring escort becomes an all-out firestorm, Alex and USS Jimmy Carter are all that stand between thousands of civilian refugees and an enemy armada. One ancient submarine against dozens of enemies makes for terrible odds...and even victory might end in death for Alex’s crew of rejects.

It’s the first real battle of Alex’s career. Does he have what it takes to save his crew from this fiery inferno?

Or will Alex Coleman and Jimmy Carter join the long list of the fallen?
